A Language System
This project places unreadable text where we expect explanations: in video captions and subtitles. Each line starts as a Chinese sentence, encoded and rewritten using a mix of seven alphabets. It looks like a real language, but its meaning remains out of reach. A small translation tool can reveal the original.
We instinctively search for something familiar in what we encounter. A letter, a repeated word, or a familiar shape can make us feel we almost understand. The work imagines two readers: someone encountering an unfamiliar language today, and someone ten thousand years from now discovering our captions. Both look for fragments they recognize to make sense of the whole.
A custom typeface, Lymeza, gives the different alphabets a shared look, as if they belonged to one lost writing system.
